Position Summary:

The Food Safety Specialist plays a critical role in maintaining and improving the facility's food safety, sanitation, and quality programs. This hybrid position combines hands-on inspection, monitoring, and verification duties with responsibilities in documentation, training, and auditing. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of working independently while supporting QA, sanitation, and production teams.

Key Responsibilities:

Daily Operations & Compliance

  • Conduct pre-operational inspections and GMP walkthroughs.
  • Monitor CCPs and preventive controls; report deviations promptly.
  • Perform environmental monitoring, ATP testing, thermometer calibration, and metal detector checks.
  • Review sanitation, allergen, and production records for completeness and accuracy.

Documentation & Program Oversight

  • Maintain accurate logs for sanitation, swabs, traceability, and allergen control.
  • Lead mock recalls, internal audits, and traceability exercises.
  • Maintain HACCP, GMP, sanitation, pest control, and allergen control programs.
  • Maintain and create nutritional and allergen data for all products

Training & Team Support

  • Train frontline staff on basic food safety, hygiene, and allergen protocols.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to sanitation or production teams regarding food safety practices.
  • Serve as back-up support during audits or QA Manager absence.

Continuous Improvement

  • Complete root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action (RCA/CAPA) investigations.
  • Support audit prep and documentation for regulatory or third-party inspections (e.g., SQF, FDA, USDA).
  • Recommend improvements to food safety and sanitation procedures.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's in Food Science, Biology, or related field preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in food safety, quality, or sanitation in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of HACCP, GMPs, and food safety regulations (training provided if needed).
  • Strong documentation skills, attention to detail, and ability to communicate clearly across teams.
  • Self-starter able to work independently and in a team setting
  • Able to work in cold, wet, hot, or noisy production areas; ability to lift 25-50 lbs occasionally.

Schedule & Compensation:

  • Full-time; Monday-Friday with occasional required early, late, or weekend hours depending on production or sanitation schedule for trainings, preventative and investigative purposes.
  • Compensation: $25-$30/hour depending on experience.
  • Opportunities for advancement with additional training and certification.
