The Director of Safety manages the Liberty University School of Aeronautics (LUSOA) safety program. The Director of Safety is responsible for ensuring that the School of Aeronautics properly implements safety policy, risk management, safety assurance, and safety promotion. The Director of Safety facilitates and leads the promotion of a positive safety culture within LUSOA. The Director of Safety works with other LUSOA directors to manage operational safety within the increasingly complex and demanding Flight Operations, Aviation Maintenance Technician Program (AMTP), and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) operations. The Director of Safety maintains flight currency in assigned aircraft in order to assess the operational safety environment. Essential functions include ensuring policies and procedures comply with FAA, NTSB, and OSHA regulations; managing the online Safety Reporting System; managing the Emergency Response Plan; analyzing aviation safety risk; coordinating safety audits; investigating aviation accidents and incidents; assisting with revision of flight operations documentation; coordinating with department directors on operational risk; promoting safety among staff and students; leading safety promotion events. Supervisory responsibilities include supervising the Associate Director of Safety and assigned student workers, and possibly other staff with safety duties. Qualifications include a Bachelor's degree and flight instructor certificate (required), with preferred qualifications including Airframe and Powerplant certificate, aviation safety training, and teaching experience in Part 141, 147, or 107 contexts. Skills required include supervisory, organizational, communication, teamwork, program development, and computer skills. The job requires travel to local and campus locations, physical activities such as standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 50 pounds, and use of personal or university vehicles with valid Virginia driver's license and insurance. The work environment includes office, aviation ramp, maintenance training, and simulator settings. The target hire date is 2025-07-01.
