Summary of Primary Functions

The Consumer Loan Department Manager leads and oversees all aspects of the loan origination process, ensuring a high-performing, accurate, and streamlined operation across loan officers, processors, and support personnel. This position is responsible for designing and implementing operational strategies that enhance member satisfaction, improve processing efficiency, and reduce errors. With a strong focus on accountability, data-driven management, and continuous improvement, the manager fosters a results-oriented culture with team members that are coached, empowered and held to high standards of performance, compliance, and service excellence.

Skills and Abilities

Associate’s Degree required; Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, or related field preferred. Minimum of five years' experience in consumer lending with at least three years in a leadership or management role. Proven success in improving operational efficiency, managing loan teams, and delivering measurable performance improvements.

Strong analytical and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to identify inefficiencies and drive systemic change. In-depth understanding of loan origination systems, credit union policies, and applicable federal and state regulations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead through influence and inspire staff at all levels.

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office and credit union core and loan systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly manage and oversee loan officers, loan processors, and loan support staff, ensuring consistent performance in alignment with strategic lending goals.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives across all stages of loan origination to streamline workflows, reduce turnaround time, and enhance accuracy.
  • Enhance automation across lending processes to improve member experience and accelerate loan turnaround times.
  • Collaborate closely with the Consumer Lending Director and Consumer Lending Supervisors to ensure aligned operations, consistent messaging, and cohesive lending practices.
  • Develop and maintain clear and consistent underwriting guidelines to support loan officer decision-making and standardize lending practices.
  • Conduct monthly department meetings to ensure communication flow and cross-functional awareness and hold regular one-on-one coaching sessions to support individual staff development.
  • Maintain operational excellence through rigorous quality control checks, timely error resolution, and adherence to regulatory, policy, and procedural requirements.
  • Develop and monitor KPIs; regularly analyze trends to identify inefficiencies and implement targeted solutions.
  • Create a culture of accountability by setting clear expectations, delivering regular feedback, and conducting timely performance evaluations.
  • Ensure staff are well-trained and cross-functional by providing ongoing coaching, development, and support to increase departmental versatility and resilience.
  • Review and refine underwriting guidelines in collaboration with the Consumer Lending Director to promote sound, risk-based lending practices.
  • Approve or deny loan applications within Board-authorized limits, including complex or exception-based decisions.
  • Investigate and resolve member complaints or escalated loan issues with professionalism and a focus on long-term relationship management.
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to align lending operations with overall organizational priorities and provide seamless service to members.
  • Provide monthly and quarterly reports related to lending performance, staff productivity, and operational integrity.
  • Other duties as assigned

Compensation and Job Title is commensurate with experience and may fall under the following pay ranges:

Consumer Loan Manager- $85,983 to $128,974 Annually
